The Opportunity
Could you be the person who makes a young person believe in themselves again?
At Barnsley College, our Foundation Learning department is a little different. We work with young people who have often faced significant barriers to education, including SEND, trauma, disrupted education and challenging personal circumstances.
We believe that every young person deserves to feel that they belong, that they matter and that they can succeed. Sometimes, they just need someone who refuses to give up on them.
We are looking for two Tutorial Learning Mentors who share that belief.
This is not always an easy job. Some days will test your patience, creativity and resilience. Progress is not always linear and success does not always look like a qualification. Sometimes, it is a young person walking through the door after weeks of absence, trusting an adult for the first time or beginning to believe they have a future.
When those moments happen, the job satisfaction is extraordinary.
Working with a caseload of learners, you will provide personalised pastoral support, guidance and mentoring to help young people build confidence, improve their engagement and attendance, and achieve their goals.
You will work closely with learners, families, colleagues and external agencies to break down barriers and ensure young people can access the support they need. You will deliver effective group tutorials, support learners individually and in small groups, monitor attendance and punctuality, and help learners set and review meaningful targets.
You will also support learners during key transitions, use motivational and solution-focused approaches, and help young people take their next steps in education, employment or training.
You will join a passionate, creative and supportive team that believes in inclusion by design, celebrates individuality and recognises that every small step forward matters.
If you are looking for a job where no two days are the same, where you will be challenged, supported and given the opportunity to genuinely transform young lives, we would love to hear from you.
Because sometimes, the difference between a young person giving up and succeeding is one adult who believes they can.
About You
We are looking for someone who:
Has patience, empathy and a genuine understanding of the challenges young people may face
Understands trauma-informed and inclusive approaches, recognising that behaviour is often a form of communication
Is resilient, solution-focused and willing to think differently when traditional approaches do not work
Builds positive and trusting relationships while maintaining clear professional boundaries and high expectations
Has the drive, determination and passion to make a real difference, even when progress takes time
Can work effectively with learners, parents, carers, colleagues and external agencies
Understands tutorial and pastoral support systems and the importance of early intervention
Can use motivational techniques to encourage learners to engage with their education
Is confident supporting young people who may display challenging behaviours or face complex circumstances
Is flexible, creative and committed to helping every learner succeed
You will have significant experience of working with young people, including experience within an educational setting.
