Alongside the logistics work sit the steady public-sector and care employers, plus retail and a smaller engineering base left over from industrial Barnsley.

The biggest single private employer is the GXO-run ASOS fulfilment centre at Park Spring Road, Grimethorpe (S72 7GX), which employs more than 3,000 staff and recruits warehouse operatives in waves. Evri's automated parcel hub off the Dearne Valley Parkway is another large logistics site, opened as the company's biggest distribution hub in Europe. Away from the sheds: Koyo Bearings (JTEKT Automotive England) on Elmhirst Lane in Dodworth (S75 3TA) for automotive bearing manufacture, Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council as the major public employers, Barnsley College in the town centre, the Digital Media Centre and wider Seam digital campus, and the retail jobs at The Glass Works next to the Interchange. Transport: Barnsley Interchange has direct trains to Sheffield in about 26 minutes and Leeds in around 40, with the bus station alongside, which matters because many residents commute to Sheffield and Leeds for work.
