Chapeltown sits at the northern edge of Sheffield in the S35 postcode, where the city gives way to the Don valley and the South Yorkshire coalfield villages. It grew up around Newton, Chambers & Co., the Thorncliffe ironworks that became the largest manufacturer of Churchill tanks during the Second World War and made Izal disinfectant. The works are long gone, but the site they left behind, Thorncliffe Park, is now the area's main employment base. Live vacancies are weighted towards warehousing, manufacturing, engineering and skilled trades, alongside retail and care work.

The largest concentration of jobs is the Thorncliffe Park Estate on Newton Chambers Road (S35 2PH), a mixed estate of industrial units, trade counters and office suites running to well over a hundred small and mid-sized firms. Nearby, the PLP Smithywood logistics park sits against Junction 35 of the M1, where Advanced Supply Chain Group runs a distribution operation that was set up to create around 400 warehouse and transport jobs. Beyond the estates there are smaller engineering and fabrication firms, the district shopping at Chapeltown and Ecclesfield, schools and care providers. A large share of warehouse and driving work is filled through logistics agencies rather than direct, so registering with the Sheffield and Barnsley branches alongside direct applications is worthwhile.

Chapeltown station is on the Hallam and Penistone lines, with Northern running into Sheffield in about 13 minutes, twice an hour, plus services towards Barnsley, Leeds and Huddersfield. The M1 at Junction 35 connects to the M18, A1 and M62, which is part of why the logistics sites are concentrated here. The S35 postcode covers Chapeltown, High Green, Ecclesfield and Grenoside; central Sheffield jobs in the S1 to S14 range are a short distance down the line.
